Location and Size

Motorway Situated in north-west Nottinghamshire, the district of Ashfield lies just north of Nottingham City with excellent communications corridors through the A38 and junctions 27 and 28 of the M1, also boasting close proximity to East Midlands Airport. The Robin Hood Line runs north south with four stations in Ashfield connecting Nottingham City to Worksop. Ashfield's location is so central that over 70% of the nation's population can be reached with three hours.

Population

Ashfield comprises three large settlements Kirkby-in-Ashfield, (population 25,030), Sutton-in-Ashfield, (population 41,265), and Hucknall, (population 29,210) alongside the rural parishes of Annesley, Felley and Selston. The 10,994ha district as a whole is home to 108,700 residents.

Character

Traditionally, Ashfield is predominantly a manufacturing area (engineering and textiles, and, at one time, coal mining), with a rich cultural heritage and excellent leisure and sporting facilities. Newstead Abbey (ancestral home of Lord Byron) lies just over Ashfield's eastern border and the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Hucknall is the final resting place of Lord Byron and the Byron family. Environmental reclamation has been achieved on many sites despoiled by the coal industry resulting in a wealth of country parks, golf courses and development land. As a result Ashfield presents an attractive and clean environment in which to live and work.

Industry and Employment

Picture of industry As an assisted area offering British Government regional selective assistance and enterprise grants Ashfield in the 21st century provides new opportunities for business investment in the form of extensive and well-developed industrial sites. Sherwood Park near junction 27 of the M1 is the district's flagship development. The park employs nearly 4000 people and boasts Enterprise Zone status as home to such companies as Kodak, Tsubakimoto, UK-owned Pendragon, Boots, Italian-owned OMB (UK) Speciality Valves, Autofil Worldwide and a joint venture company between Rolls Royce and the USA-owned Chromalloy Gas Turbine Corporation.
