Dog Fouling
||Dog fouling is a health hazard and it makes us feel bad about our community to encounter it.
A cleaner neighbourhood.
We all want it.
We can all help to achieve it.
Ashfield District Council (like all Local Authorities) has a legal duty to keep certain types of land which come under its control clear of dog faeces, as far as is practicable. These areas include:
- Parks
- Recreation grounds
- Children's playgrounds
- Sports grounds
- Picnic sites
- Pedestrianised areas
- Pavements
- Verges
- Footpaths
- Gutters and carriageways
To report dog fouling please contact the Dog Control Officer or report the problem online.
Prosecution for Dog Fouling
Prosecution in the magistrate's court may result in a fine of up to £1,000. Alternatively the Council may issue a fixed penalty notice. Payment of a fixed penalty of £50 within 14 days discharges any liability for the offence. If you fail to pay the fixed penalty you will be prosecuted which could result in a higher fine and responsibility for the court costs. The fixed penalty notice is discretionary; where a persistent offender is known the authority may prosecute.
It is every dog owner's duty to clean up after their dog:
- If you have a garden encourage the dog to "go" there. You can then bury the mess or alternatively clean it up and bin it.
- If you walk your dog always carry the means to clear up after your dog. The council provides poop scoop bags free of charge at all council offices.
- Never let your dog out by itself to "go to the loo".

Dog Control Orders
There are many dog owners across Ashfield and the majority act responsibly and keep their dog or dogs under control which
includes clearing up after their dog in a public place. Unfortunately the small number of inconsiderate dog owners who don't
keep their dog or dogs under control and clear up after their dog causes many problems for the community.
