Garden Waste Scheme

||

Do you want your garden waste collecting?

Do you want your garden waste collecting in 2012?

Ashfield District Councils' garden waste scheme could be just what you need!

For a small annual charge we can collect your compostable garden waste once a fortnight. Collections will start early March running through to late 2012.

So how do you join the scheme?

The fortnightly garden waste collection costs £20 for the season (March - late 2012).

You can join the scheme in the following ways:

Visit us at any of the Council Offices where you can pay by cash, cheque, debit or credit card. Our offices are located on:

Urban Road, Kirkby in Ashfield;

Fox Street, Sutton in Ashfield;

Nottingham Road, Selston;

Watnall Road, Hucknall.

Call us on 0800 183 84 84 or 01623 457873 and pay by debit or credit card.

On-line by clicking here

Please note there is 1.5% charge for paying by credit card. For more details contact us on 0800 183 84 84.

What then?

Once we have received your payment, we will aim to deliver your brown bin within 10 working days. You will also receive another leaflet highlighting your collection days.

What do you get for your £20?

Your £20 provides you with the use of a wheelie bin and a minimum of 20 collections between March and late 2012. Please note that the bin remains the property of Ashfield District Council and will be reclaimed should you drop out of the scheme or fail to use it as intended.

Why not have an additional bin?

If you routinely generate more waste than your brown bin can hold or have some bigger gardening project planned, you may wish to consider increasing your subscription with one or more extra brown bins.  You may request any number of additional bins and can present them for collection as often or as infrequently as you desire on the days of your normal brown bin collection.

Additional brown bin subscriptions are half-price, only £10 per bin per year.

What can go in the brown bin?

Only organic garden waste can be collected. This includes:

Grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, leaves, prunings, twigs, plants, weeds and cut flowers. These items should be put in the bin loose. Any bins which contain the wrong materials cannot be emptied.

How big are the bins?

The brown bin is the same size as 'green lidded' bin (240 litres).

Why are we introducing this scheme?

Compostable organic garden waste makes up around 32% of the contents of a typical rubbish bin. Unfortunately, all the garden waste put in the 'black/grey lidded' bins is buried in landfill.

By providing a separate garden waste collection we can ensure this material is composted reducing the pressure on landfill space and cutting the harmful emissions they cause.

What if I took part in the scheme last year?

If you took part in the scheme last year and still have a brown bin then you will continue to use the same bin. It takes a week to process your subscription, so your service will commence on the first scheduled collection after 7 days of receipt of your payment.

Is the garden waste scheme good value?

Just think of the time and hassle saved by not taking the garden waste to the tip every week.

Last year we collected and composted nearly 3,400 tonnes of garden waste from almost 12,400 customers.

What do our customers think?

"I would like to say what a brilliant idea it is.  I recycle as much as I can and have two compost heaps.  The brown bin saves me having to go to the tip each week with stuff that can't go on the compost heap.  At £20 per year, it's well worth the money and convenience."

" ... a wonderful service ..."

"... what a good idea ..."

"... the brown bin service is excellent. Its helped to keep my car clean as we have not had to go to the waste sites ..."

"... brown bin, fantastic. Don't stop the scheme, money well spent..."
