Grey / Black Lidded Bins

'Grey/Black Lidded’ Wheelie Bin
This wheelie bin is for all of your non-recyclable waste. It is advisable to bag the waste that goes into this wheelie bin to prevent any smells escaping from the bin. Try to avoid using plastic carrier bags as they have air holes allowing any smells to escape. White pedal bin liners are best, as they are completely air tight.
When the Council first started buying wheelie bins back in the 1980s, they had grey lids with black bodies. During the 1990s, it was cheaper to buy the wheelie bins in one colour. Therefore we started buying them with black lids and black bodies. Many of the original wheelie bins with the grey lids are still in use.
To save confusion we now refer to both sets of wheelie bins on our literature as ‘grey/black lidded’.
Security Advice
It is highly recommended to write
your house number and street name on the wheelie bin as sometimes they are stolen once the collection crews have emptied them.
If a wheelie bin has your address on it and it is stolen there is more chance of the bin being found again. The Council have
found that thieves are more likely to steal a wheelie bin with no house number written on it as it can’t be traced to the
location is was stolen from.
Where Does The Council Dispose Of The Rubbish In The ‘Grey/Black Lidded’ Bins?
At present the rubbish collected via the ‘grey/black lidded’ bins ends up in Dorket Head landfill site.
With no new sites planned to be opened in this area, recycling our waste is really important as the Council is fast running out of places to take your waste to.
