How Do I Apply?
There are two ways of making an application to Building Control for work you intend to undertake that requires consent:
- A Full Plans application – suitable for all types of work
- A Building Notice – only suitable for minor domestic works
Full Plans applications
As the name suggests, this method involves the submission of detailed plans of your proposals and you are therefore advised to employ someone who is experienced in this type of work. This method is suitable for all application types both domestic and commercial.
Each application is likely to be different; however, a checklist can be downloaded from the "Building Control Forms" page, which will give you guidance on the information that should be included in order to minimise delays when processing your application.

Building Notice
The Building Notice procedure is very straightforward and you are only expected to submit a minimal amount of information, in order for the application to be processed. For this reason, this type of application is most suited to minor domestic works, where the person undertaking the works is fully conversant with the requirements of the Building Regulations.
A checklist can be downloaded from the "Building Control Forms" page, which will give you guidance on the information that should be included in order to minimise delays when processing your application.
It should be noted that whilst the amount of information to process the application is limited, the Building Control Officer may request further details, for example structural calculations, where the need arises.

Regularisation Application
If works have already been carried out and you would like to obtain retrospective approval you have the option of applying for a regularisation certificate.
